3 Steps to a Quality Growth Plan Conversation 

Once you’ve built your plan, the next step is bringing it to life through conversation.

BEFORE

Complete any relevant pre-work or toolkits to support your thinking.

Take time to thoughtfully complete your My Growth Plan document, ensuring all objectives are SMART — Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

When ready, schedule a one-to-one with your line manager to explore your plan together.

DURING

Your Growth Plan conversation should be open, honest, and collaborative.

Review each section of your plan together, refining ideas and aligning objectives with both your personal goals and the wider priorities of the organisation.

This doesn’t have to happen in a single meeting — meaningful growth takes time, and the conversation can continue across several sessions if needed

AFTER

Update your plan to reflect the outcome of your conversation and submit the final version to your line manager within 48 hours.

Remember: your development belongs to you. Own it. Drive it. Champion it. Any agreed courses or learning opportunities should be coordinated directly with your line manager.
